My Teaching System

What makes my teaching method different from other teachers?  Why study with me, when there are a hundred other guitar teachers in the area?  Well, I'm going to tell you.

Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the past 25 years, you've probably seen a few of my print ads in the local newspapers or music publications.  One of my "trademarks", if you will, is that I don't teach using books or music reading.  Now this is where some of you roll your eyes and you're starting to think, "how can you teach music without reading or writing it?  Isn't that impossible?  Who would do such a thing??  This Ed Fuhrman guy must be out of his mind or just plain crazy!"

Well, I'm not out of my mind or crazy. (well maybe a little crazy)  Crazy about the guitar that is!

My first two years of studying the guitar involved plenty of music reading.  I was taking traditional style classical guitar lessons from a top local teacher.  All I did was read music.  There was a problem however;  I could read the music fairly well, but I could not play to save my life.  Imagine, after two years of lessons, I could hardly play!  I was not getting the sounds I wanted to get out of the guitar.  I could not play the songs I wanted to play.  I was so frustrated by all this that I actually quit playing altogether.  Sound familiar?  Maybe you or someone you know had a similar experience.  This is why I will never give these "traditional style" guitar lessons.

A few months after quitting the guitar, I was fortunate enough to have met a friend who helped me get back into it.  I began teaching myself from that point on, and things started to improve.  I started to enjoy the guitar. I started to be able to figure out some songs I was listening to on the radio. I was learning how to improvise and write my own music.  All of this without ever having to read or write a single note of music.  Guitar was becoming fun for me.  At age 15 when I began teaching guitar, I vowed never to put my students through the boredom and frustration that I went through.  The last thing I would ever want to do is turn someone off to the guitar.  Let's face it, traditional style guitar lessons are dry and boring.  They always will be.  So why waste your precious time and money on them.  There is another way, a better way to learn the guitar!

My method is unique and custom tailored to each student.  I teach all scales, chords, arpeggios, techniques, and theory.  Every topic is covered from songwriting to advanced soloing concepts.  Live performance and studio recording techniques.  You name it, I teach it.  All of this without ever reading a note of music or using any books whatsoever.  Sound impossible?  It's not.  Get in touch with me and let's get you started.
